Lot 69

Property of a deceased's estate, c.1953/46 Ariel 350cc Red Hunter

Property of a deceased's estate
c.1953/46 Ariel 350cc Red Hunter
Registration no. CAS 602
Frame no. AS 1932
Engine no. BK 833

By 1930, Ariel's Val Page-designed singles had gained a rear-mounted magneto and their distinctive timing cover, and the basic engine design, though frequently revised, would last well into the post-war era. The sports versions were christened 'Red Hunter' and under Page's successor Edward Turner developed into fast and stylish machines. In 1946 the Hunters became the first models to feature Ariel's new telescopic front fork, and the following year could be ordered with the optional 'Anstey Link' plunger rear suspension. A new duplex loop frame with swinging-arm rear suspension was adopted for 1954 and the 500cc VH gained an alloy 'head at the same time (a feature the 350cc NH would not enjoy until the 1956 range was announced). In 1956 full-width alloy hubs were adopted across the range, and the Red Hunters continued in this form until production of Ariel four-strokes ceased in 1959.

This plunger-framed Ariel Red Hunter belonged to the late Robert Munday, the lady vendor's father. Bob was a well-known and highly respected figure within the Vintage Motor Cycle Club (VMCC) and was heavily involved with the club for many years. The Ariel was built by Bob and the private vendor advises us that it was the last bike he rode before his passing in 2013, since when it has remained unused and stored in the family garage. The family has now decided that the time has come to sell the machine. It should be noted that the Ariel is a 'bitsa' comprising a believed circa 1953 frame and a circa 1946/1947 engine.

Following a period of inactivity, this motorcycle will require recommissioning or possibly more extensive restoration before returning to the road and thus is sold strictly as viewed (the engine turns over). Prospective purchasers must satisfy themselves with regard to this machine's history, authenticity, originality, mechanical condition, and completeness (or otherwise) prior to bidding. Offered with an old-style V5C Registration Certificate.
