c.1937 Velocette 249cc GTP

c.1937 Velocette 249cc GTP
Registration no. LVS 587
Frame no. 6089
Engine no. GB 6019

The first machine to bear the name 'Velocette' was a two-stroke, differentiating it from the larger, four-stroke Veloce, and the type was an almost permanent fixture of the Hall Green range until WW2. The ultimate expression of Velocette's two-stroke line - the GTP - appeared in 1930. Unlike many of its contemporaries, it was not a 'built-to-a-price' utility model but a sporting lightweight of advanced design incorporating coil ignition and pumped lubrication controlled by the throttle. Early models had the three-speed hand-change gearbox, later ones the four-speed foot-change type, and all employed Velocette's characteristic slimline clutch. The GTP remained in production up to 1940 but, sadly, Velocette's two-stroke line was not revived post-war.

Litle of the previous history of this four-speed GTP is known prior to its purchase by the private vendor in 2023. Since acquisition the Velo has been used occasionally and was started up recently having been off the road during the winter. The machine is offered with a V5C Registration Certificate, technical literature, workshop manuals, parts lists and some restoration notes from a previous owner.
