c.1936 Velocette 349cc KSS 'Mark VI KTT Replica'

c.1936 Velocette 349cc KSS 'Mark VI KTT Replica'
Registration no. not registered
Frame no. KDD 9163 (see text)
Engine no. KSS10195 Gearbox No. 5-403

This motorcycle is a finely executed replica of the near-mythical 1936 Velocette Mark VI KTT. As one might expect, their latter was a development of the preceding Mark V, the most significant step forward being the newcomer's double-overhead-camshaft cylinder head. Only three – all 350s – were built. Despite considerable success on the Continent (works rider Ted Mellors became European Champion in the Junior class in 1936), the Isle of Man TT debacle, when two out of the three failed to finish, proved so embarrassing that the project was dropped. WW2 would have come and gone before Velocette went down the DOHC route again.

Although this replica could benefit from some minor refinements to more closely resemble the Mark VI KTT, it remains an exceptionally presented machine in its own right.

The machine is fitted with double-damped girder forks, a ribbed front brake, and the correct style conical rear brake. A standout feature is its impressive Mark VI-style fuel tank (maker unknown). The engine currently installed is a KSS Mark II unit.

The current private vendor has owned the machine for around eight years, having purchased it in its present form from Velocette Owners Club member, Dick Hannis. It has not been used on the road during this time, though it has been started occasionally.

Included in the sale is a substantial collection of components intended to assist in the assembly of a more accurate KTT-type (Mark IV-style) engine. These parts comprise:

• Unstamped Mark VI KTT-style crankcases (believed to be replicas)
• Cylinder head
• KTT replica cylinder barrel
• BTH magneto
• Mark VIII type piston
• Mark VIII type con-rod
• Inlet/exhaust valves, guides, springs
• Flywheel and pinions
• Magneto drive pinions
• Cam drive shaft
• Cam drive shaft tube
• Cam box with bevel housing
• Cam
• Oil pressure springs
• Oil pump
• Cam-box cover
• Fuel tank support

To complete this proposed engine, further machining and some additional parts will be required. Should it be assembled, new engine and gearbox mounting plates would also be required in order to position the engine approximately 1¼ inches lower in the frame for greater accuracy.

Following a period of inactivity, this motorcycle will require recommissioning and/or restoration to a greater or lesser extent before further use and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's completeness, history, authenticity, originality and mechanical condition prior to bidding.
