c.1971 Rickman Montesa 250cc Scrambler

c.1971 Rickman Montesa 250cc Scrambler
Registration no. not registered
Frame no. 1742
Engine no. 63M0118

The Rickman frame has an enviable record of success, not only in moto-cross where it was first developed but also in road racing and enduro events. Even after the Rickman brothers stopped producing it themselves, demand for their frame remained high, particularly among classic racers, and the design was taken up by Pat French's MRD Metisse concern. This versatile chassis proved sufficiently adaptable to accommodate engines ranging from British singles to Japanese fours. In scaled-down form it provided the basis for 250cc Montesa and 125cc Zundapp powered off-road models, the use of these proprietary engines giving Rickman the opportunity to compete in the all-important North American market.
The Rickman Montesa scrambler offered here is a highly regarded off-road motorcycle from a period when specialist chassis builders and Spanish engine manufacturers combined to produce some of the best competition bikes of the era.

David Grittins' marque history - Derek & Don Rickman - The Metisse Story - lists frames 1725 – 1824 as 'Montesa MX' despatched to 'Steens' in April 1971 (per the Rickman frame plaque dated '471' and frame number '1742').

A rare and very nicely presented show stopper, the machine has been ridden regularly on the private vendor's estate and was last started last summer. Following a period of inactivity, this motorcycle will require recommissioning and/or restoration to a greater or lesser extent before further use and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's completeness, history, authenticity, originality and mechanical condition prior to bidding.
