Lot 4

Property of a deceased's estate, 1954 Vincent 998cc Series-C Black Shadow 'Black Lightning Replica'

Property of a deceased's estate
1954 Vincent 998cc Series-C Black Shadow 'Black Lightning Replica'
Registration no. not registered
Frame no. RC12167B Rear frame no. RC12167B (see text)
Engine no. F10AB/1B/10267 Crankcase mating no. D18V / D18V

This Lightning replica belonged to the late David Page, the lady vendor's father. David used this machine extensively for sprinting during the 1960s, normally aspirated and, in 1965, 1,300cc supercharged specification (see MPH December 2010 edition on file) with great success. There is plentiful sprinting history paperwork on file together with period photographs of David competing on the Vincent at various sprinting events in the 1960s.

According to notes in the history file, it is believed this machine was enlarged to 1,300cc and fitted with a supercharger by well-known tuner Jim Smith of Pegsdon in 1965. The engine was subsequently rebuilt by Derek Chinn, who returned it to 1,000cc capacity. In 2005 the machine was extensively restored by John Mossey to its current condition.

Vincent Owners Club records show that engine number 'F10AB/1B/10267' and upper frame member 'RC12167B' originate from a Series-C Black Shadow manufactured in 1954. The exact date and where it was despatched to is not known, as the factory records are missing for this machine.

It should be noted that some of the rear frame number stamping does not appear to be typical factory fonts. The late owner (David Page) had previously informed the VOC that he purchased the crankcases and headstock only back in 1964 and built those components into a sprinter.

David left the Vincent to his three daughters, and the family has now decided that the time has come to sell it. The machine was last started/run in May 2026 and a video of it running may be viewed on the Bonhams website. Prospective purchasers must satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's history, authenticity, originality, mechanical condition, and completeness (or otherwise) prior to bidding. Sold strictly as seen, the machine is offered with a 2015 VOC Dating Certificate; various invoices from the VOC, Derek Chinn, John Mossey and others; a substantial collection of MPH magazines, marque related literature and the aforementioned sprinting-related records and period photographs (perusal recommended).
