Ex Dennis Jenkins, 1957 MV Agusta 175 Sport (CS) Project

Ex Dennis Jenkins, 1957 MV Agusta 175 Sport (CS) Project

Registration no. 882 BJO
Frame no. 419226S
Engine no. 473531S

Having commenced motorcycle production late in 1945 with a 98cc two-stroke, Meccanica Verghera (MV) introduced its first production four-strokes, the single-cylinder 175CST and CSTL, at the Milan Show in 1952, the newcomers' advanced overhead-cam, unitary construction engine setting them apart from most of the opposition. Their cycle parts too were state-of-the-art, consisting of a duplex loop frame incorporating the engine as a stressed member, oil-damped telescopic front fork, swinging-arm rear suspension and full-width alloy hubs. In 1954 the 175 Sport (CS) arrived featuring an engine in a higher state of tune that increased maximum power to 11bhp at 7,000rpm and pushed top speed to 73mph. Alternative versions with either a race-developed Earles-type leading-link fork or conventional telescopics were offered. Not surprisingly, the 175 Sport was MV's best seller, a distinction it would retain until the late 1950s. Production of these highly successful 175cc models continued until 1958.

This MV Agusta was purchased by famed motoring journalist and racing driver Dennis Jenkins on 23rd December 1960 from Heath Bros in Farnham, Surrey. Not much is known about its history while in 'Jenks' ownership but we are advised by the private vendor that Jenks intended to convert it for hill climbing. It was bequeathed to the private vendor's father - a good friend of Jenks - already dismantled and is sold today in the same condition as it was when bequeathed. Offered for restoration and sold strictly as viewed, the machine comes with a current V5C Registration Certificate; its original old-style logbook listing Jenks as '3rd Change'; a photograph of it prior to disassembly; and Jenks' purchase invoice from 1960. Key not required.
