Greeves' unorthodox trademarks of a cast aluminium beam 'downtube' and rubber-in-torsion leading-link fork proved adaptable to almost all forms of motorcycle from humble commuter, via a succession of highly successful off-roaders, to clubman's road-racer. One of a relatively small number of ISDT models manufacture by Greeves, of which even fewer survive, this example reputedly dates from 1964. The frame appears to be unnumbered, but there is a museum label on file listing the number as '241N166' (it is possible this should be '24IN166').
Writing in his excellent marque history - Greeves The Complete Story - Colin Sparrow says this about the factory's 1964 International Six Days Trial campaign: "As had become their practice, Greeves produced specially adapted machines for the ISDT. Based on the Challenger, the 1964 machines were scramblers fitted with appropriate road equipment. The Greeves riders selected for the national teams were: Bryan Sharp and Peter Stirland (Vase A); and Triss Sharp and David Clegg (Vase B). Held in East Germany in 1964, the event would prove a fruitful venture for Greeves, with Gold Medals awarded to Triss Sharp (137), Bryan Sharp (121), Monty Banks, Frits Selling (143), Hein van Ost, Jan Van der Hock and Simon Schram.
Believed to be an older restoration, this machine retains scrutineering stickers for competitor number '133' but its competition record remains unknown. Further research may well prove fruitful.
It should be noted that the exhaust pipe is semi-detached (the engine turns over).
Following a period of inactivity, this motorcycle will require recommissioning and/or restoration to a greater or lesser extent before returning to the road and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's completeness, history, authenticity, originality and mechanical condition prior to bidding.
