'Once a leading factory, Yamaguchi concentrated on a variety of 49cc models including mofas, mopeds, etc and also built 123cc two-strokes with vertical twin-cylinder engines. The range included trials machines. When the factory closed, Hodaka took over the works.' – Irwin Tragatsch, The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Motorcycles.
One of the many motorcycle companies that made little impact outside of its native Japan, the Yamaguchi Bicycle Manufacturing Company produced bicycles prior to WW2 and lightweight two-stroke motorcycles from 1953 to 1964. The company commenced production using their own-built frames and proprietary engines supplied by Fuji and Hodaka, and by the mid-1950s had risen to become Japan's sixth largest motorcycle maker. Increasingly fierce domestic competition saw many Japanese motorcycle companies fail in the 1960s, Yamaguchi being one of them.
According to Cycle World magazine (September 1962 edition): "Those who still might be scoffing at the many miniscule cycles appearing on the roads today might do well to reserve their blanket condemnation of these little tiddlers until they have tried a few of them. Particularly machines like the Yamaguchi Autopet, or SPB Scrambler, to be more precise." The esteemed American motorcycling journal continued: "Favourable impressions do not end with the feel and handling of the Yamaguchi. To the man we were all pleased and surprised by the performance. Though not shattering, the acceleration is extremely brisk and most satisfying. We obtained over 55mph in 4th gear and the manufacturer claims a top speed of 60mph when well broken in." Cycle World encouraged prospective customers to give the little Yamaguchi serious consideration.
This example of a Japanese motorcycle rarely seen in the UK is presented in restored condition.
Following a period of inactivity, this motorcycle will require recommissioning and/or restoration to a greater or lesser extent before returning to the road and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's completeness, history, authenticity, originality and mechanical condition prior to bidding.
