"Built 246cc two-stroke twins, which had much in common with German Adler motorcycles." - Erwin Tragatsch, The Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Motorcycles.

Tragatch, however, is not infallible and it would appear that Toyomotor built a much wider variety of models from 1946 to 1959, including a motorised bicycle which was Japan's third best-selling two-wheeler by 1952. Toyo Motors was founded in Kariya, Japan by Kazuo Kawamata, who in 1942 was hired by Toyota Moto Research to assist in the development of engines suitable for small motorcycles. In 1949 he founded Toyo Motors, a Toyota subsidiary. It was a propitious moment: the post-war years saw a worldwide boom in demand for cheap motorised transport, and by 1952 Toyo Motors was selling 10,000 machines annually through Toyota dealerships. The boom days were not to last, though; in 1958 Honda introduced the Super Cub model that all but wiped out the competition, one of the first casualties being Toyo Motors.

This Toyomotor auxiliary engine is attached to a Hikari 'New Model' bicycle and is presented in restored condition.

Following a period of inactivity, this motorcycle will require recommissioning and/or restoration to a greater or lesser extent before returning to the road and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's completeness, history, authenticity, originality and mechanical condition prior to bidding.
