1969 24 HOURS OF LE MANS – EXTRA-LARGE DIORAMA

This unique diorama recreates the starting grid of the 1969 24 Hours of Le Mans on an exceptional scale and with extraordinary attention to detail. Built to 1:43 scale, it stretches nearly 5 metres in length, making it an extraordinary piece both in size and in the richness of its content.

The result of eight months of work by a passionate craftsman, the diorama features all 24 cars at the start, 2,815 figures, the pit buildings, and the vibrant atmosphere of the era.

It faithfully recreates the legendary Le Mans-style start of 1969 — the very last in the history of the race.

While the other drivers ran towards their cars, Jacky Ickx deliberately walked, protesting against a starting procedure he considered outdated and dangerous. He fastened his harness, set off from last position — and went on to win the race. Ickx himself would later describe it as "the race of the century."

The diorama is accompanied by an original handwritten letter from Jacky Ickx, winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, confirming the fidelity and accuracy of the starting scene depicted in the diorama.

Mounted on a bespoke base and protected by a secure Securit tempered-glass display case, the diorama offers an exceptional level of detail.

Model maker Éric Bayez presents here his third creation, following "The Start of the 1968 24 Hours of Le Mans" and the 1970 warm-up — and by far his most spectacular work.

Through its realism and immersive energy, this remarkable piece transports the viewer to the heart of Le Mans legend.

A masterful work and a true collector's piece, destined for the finest automotive collections.

Buyers Premium and Charges
Like the vast majority of auctioneers Bonhams charge a Buyer's Premium on the Hammer Price of each Lot purchased and this is subject to VAT. Some lots may also be subject to VAT on the Hammer Price and these lots will be clearly marked with a symbol (†, Ω, *) printed beside the lot number.
For Automobilia the Buyer's Premium is 30% on the first €30,000 of the hammer price, 28% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of €30,000 up to and including €600,000, 25% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of €600,000 up to and including €1,200,000, 21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of €1,200,000 up to and including €6,000,000, and 14% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of €6,000,000
For Motor Cars and Vehicle Registration Numbers the Buyer's Premium will be 15% FLAT of the Hammer Price on each vehicle.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% + VAT of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
VAT at the standard rate is payable on the Buyers Premium by all Buyers, unless otherwise stated.
