From a tuner and modifier of Porsches, Alois Ruf graduated into automobile manufacturer, being awarded that status in 1981 by the German Automobile Manufacturers Association. The first group of Ruf-designated cars - numbered BTR1, BTR2, and BTR3 - was constructed in the 1980s. Ruf's favoured Porsche 911 was the basis for the trio. Ruf's concept of a super-tuned and upgraded Porsche 911 progressed via the CTR and CTR2. With a top speed of around 213mph (343km/h), the original CTR held the title of world's fastest production vehicle for many years.

The RCT (Ruf Carrera Turbo) entered production in 1992 offering performance similar to that of its BTR predecessor. The later RCT EVO was available in various versions such as narrow-body, wide-body, coupé, convertible and Targa, and could be ordered with either two- or four-wheel drive.
According to Ruf: "The RCT EVO (RUF Carrera Turbo) forms the core basis of the RUF conversion programme. Taking the 964 Carrera Coupe (C2 and C4) - the finished article is built exactly to your specification, in any exterior and interior colour combinations with a wide range of extra options available.

"With an output of 425 bhp (313 kW) @ 5,800 rpm the 6-cylinder RUF Turbocharged, Manual, 6 speed powertrain delivers truly scintillating performance with every day usability. Alois Ruf describes the car as the most useable everyday RUF model, whilst delivering a 0-60 mph time of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 200 mph.

"First conceived in the early 1990s with more horsepower than the contemporary 911 Turbo, it exists in both rear- and four-wheel-drive forms and used one of RUF's single-turbo air-cooled 3.6-litre motors. We also rebuild the six-speed manual gearbox, install our own limited-slip differential and upgrade the suspension system.

"In tradition with keeping it's distinctive 964 shape, the standard steel body is completely refinished, but with distinctive RUF Aerodynamics and styling cues added to enhance both the design and the performance elements of the car.

In addition to the already generous factory specification the RCT EVO featured the following desirable upgrades:

Front: RUF 5-spoke 8.5" x 18 light-alloy wheels with tyres 225/40 ZR 18 (other sizes available)
Rear: RUF 5-spoke 10" x 18 light-alloy wheels with tyres 265/35 ZR 18 (other sizes available)
RUF Electric, heated, sports mirrors, improved aerodynamics
RUF logo in silver on the front hood
RUF 3-spoke sport steering wheel in leather with manual height and depth adjustment
RUF /leather shift knob
RUF Aluminium pedal set and footrest

ventilated and cross-drilled brake discs
