A development of the 350cc B31, the 500cc B33 was manufactured from 1947 to 1960. BSA's rugged, workaday B31 was a new introduction for 1945, its overhead-valve engine providing the basis for the renowned Gold Star sports roadster. At the time of its introduction, the B31 was BSA's sole all-new model, joining the lightweight 'C' and heavyweight 'M' ranges carried over from pre-war days. Produced initially with rigid frame and telescopic forks, the B31 was available from 1949 with optional plunger rear suspension and switched to a swinging-arm frame, along with the rest of the range, in 1954. The B33 engine closely followed B31 lines but with larger (85mm) bore and heavier flywheels, while cycle parts were identical apart from a larger-section rear tyre. A good, solid, all-round performer by the standards of its day, the B33 could top 80mph, cruise comfortably all day at 70mph and return in excess of 70mpg.
This machine was despatched from Armoury Road to Aston Auto Motors in Birmingham in February 1955 and registered to the first owner on 22nd March that year. A continuation RF60 logbook is included in accompanying documentation. The BSA was originally registered 'ROF 462' but at some point this mark was transferred to another vehicle. The B33 was then taken to Italy and registered there. Italian registration documents are on file.
The machine was subsequently repatriated and re-registered '281 UXV' in 2006, but remained a non-runner until purchased from the previous owner's estate. A complete ground-upwards restoration was then carried out - engine, transmission and chassis - to original appearance as can be seen, though with the addition of a period Avon handlebar fairing, Rickman top box and a Stadium rear view mirror to aid rider comfort and convenience. Not visible, though, is the Norton clutch (a much more user-friendly item than the BSA original) and some sensible modernisations such as the electronic charge control unit. Only a little more than 800 miles have been covered since restoration.
This machine comes with a substantial quantity of documents besides those already mentioned above: receipts for work and services, photographs, history, and service literature. Offered with a V5C Registration Certificate.
Key not required
