This fascinating special has been in the vendor's family for decades. The project began in 1965 when the vendor's grandfather acquired the engine and fuel tank. Three years later, in 1968, he purchased a Norton Model 50 frame, manufactured in 1960 and previously owned by renowned motorcycling journalist Frank Melling. The engine itself originated from a 1937 Brough Superior SS100, creating the foundation for a truly unique machine.
In 1978, the vendor's father inherited the project after his own father lost interest in completing it. At that stage, the motorcycle was only partially assembled, with the engine mounted in the frame and fitted with mudguards and a fuel tank, but lacking an exhaust system and lighting equipment. The frame had already been modified to accommodate the engine through the use of bespoke alloy engine plates. Within just three weeks, the machine was brought to life, thanks to a handmade exhaust system and a pair of Armour silencers. A sidecar and towing bracket were later added, enabling the machine to tow a trailer. In this guise, the Norton-Brough was regularly used to transport the owner's Seeley-Norton racing motorcycle.
Although used only sparingly thereafter, the Norton-Brough underwent a comprehensive restoration in 2003, despite having covered just 2,400 miles. Once completed, it was ridden to visit the owner's father, then aged 88, allowing him the pleasure of seeing the machine running again. In recent years, the motorcycle has seen very little use and will require recommissioning before returning to the road.
Accompanying the machine is a remarkable archive documenting its history, including a detailed account of the family's experiences, challenges, and achievements throughout both the original build and subsequent restoration. Also included are numerous invoices, technical documents, photographs, a V5C Registration Certificate, and a contemporary press cutting.
