Estimate: £7,000 - £9,000

1989 Ducati 851 Strada
Registration no. F816 SNR
Frame no. DM851S3 000137
Engine no. TBA

Widely regarded as one of the most important Ducati models of the modern era, the 851 marked the beginning of the Bologna marque's return to the forefront of international superbike racing. Introduced during the late 1980s, the 851 combined Ducati's traditional 90-degree V-twin engine configuration with cutting-edge four-valve cylinder heads, liquid cooling and electronic fuel injection, technology that would form the foundation of the company's domination of Superbike racing throughout the following decade.

The road-going Strada version offered enthusiasts the opportunity to experience a machine closely related to Ducati's World Superbike contenders. Designed under the direction of Massimo Bordi and benefiting from race-inspired engineering throughout, the 851 delivered a level of performance, handling and sophistication rarely seen in a production motorcycle of its era. Producing in the region of 100bhp, the desmodromic eight-valve V-twin combined strong mid-range torque with impressive top-end performance, while the steel trellis frame, fully adjustable suspension and powerful Brembo disc brakes endowed the machine with exceptional handling characteristics. It was this combination of innovative engineering and real-world performance that established the 851 as a genuine superbike and laid the foundations for Ducati's subsequent World Championship successes.

Supplied new by Windy Corner Motorcycles in May 1989, the Ducati is offered with a history file comprising a current V5C Registration Certificate, maintenance manual, owner's manual, a quantity of invoices for servicing and parts, together with a selection of old MOT certificates. Currently displaying 21,381 kilometres (13,285 miles) on the odometer. As an early example of the model that would evolve into the legendary 888 and subsequent Ducati superbikes, it represents an increasingly desirable collector's machine.
Of further note are the carbon-fibre exhaust silencers and carbon-fibre rear hugger, tasteful upgrades that complement the machine's sporting character.

It should be noted, the HPI report identifies vehicles sharing the same VIN number associated with a Category D insurance loss and a theft marker, however, Solera (HPI) has confirmed that these records do not relate to this motorcycle. Instead, they pertain to an Armstrong motorcycle and a Cagiva W12 350 motorcycle.

Today, the 851 is recognised not only for its performance but also for its historical significance as the motorcycle that ushered Ducati into a new era. Early Strada models are becoming ever harder to find, particularly those retaining their correct specification and original character, and are increasingly sought after by collectors and marque enthusiasts alike.

A landmark model in Ducati's history and a machine credited with helping to define the modern superbike, this 851 Strada offers an exciting opportunity to acquire a highly collectible example from the dawn of Ducati's superbike renaissance.
