1983 Yamaha RD500LC YPVS
Registration no. A747 VAV
Frame no. 47X-001113
Engine no. 47X-001113

Launched in 1984, Yamaha's RD500LC represented the closest thing available to a road-going Grand Prix racing motorcycle. Developed directly from the firm's highly successful YZR500 Grand Prix machines ridden by the likes of Kenny Roberts and Eddie Lawson, the RD500LC arrived at the height of the two-stroke era and immediately captured the imagination of performance motorcycle enthusiasts worldwide.

At the heart of the machine lay a liquid-cooled 499cc V4 two-stroke engine equipped with Yamaha's revolutionary YPVS (Yamaha Power Valve System), producing in excess of 85bhp and delivering exhilarating performance. Combined with a lightweight chassis, advanced suspension and distinctive twin-crank V4 configuration, the RD500LC offered a riding experience unmatched by its contemporaries. Capable of covering the standing quarter mile in under 12 seconds and achieving speeds approaching 150mph, the model established itself as one of the most exciting and technically sophisticated superbikes of its generation.

Produced in relatively limited numbers and for a short period, the RD500LC has become one of the most sought-after Japanese performance motorcycles of its generation. Revered for its racing pedigree, iconic styling and charismatic power delivery, it remains a cornerstone of many significant motorcycle collections worldwide.

First registered in July 1984, this example is presented with matching engine and frame numbers and currently displays approximately 11,400 miles on the odometer. However, a review of the online GOV.UK MOT history records the following mileage readings:

• 18 May 2018: 11,198 miles
• 27 June 2007: 40,062 miles
• 5 July 2006: 38,830 miles

The discrepancy in recorded mileages suggests that the motorcycle may have undergone restoration work at some point in its life, possibly including the replacement of the instruments or odometer. Consequently, the mileage indicated cannot be warranted and interested parties must satisfy themselves as to its accuracy prior to bidding.

The Yamaha is believed to have been the subject of an older restoration (The HPI report listing a 2024 colour change from white to red) and is offered with a file containing the current V5C Registration Certificate, Yamaha owner's handbook and Yamaha Service Information booklet.

A genuine homologation-inspired superbike from the golden era of two-stroke performance motorcycles, the RD500LC YPVS represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of the most iconic, influential and collectable Japanese motorcycles of the 1980s. As demand continues to grow for landmark machines from this period, examples such as this remain highly prized by enthusiasts and collectors alike.
