1986 Honda VF1000R
Registration no. C16 VFR
Frame no. JH2SC1606GM100255
Engine no. SC16E - 2200257

Honda's 1970s domination of the middleweight and heavyweight classes had been achieved with a succession of across-the-frame, inline fours, but towards the end of the decade the Japanese manufacturer began to turn increasingly to vee-configuration engines, the first four-cylinder example, the VF750, arriving in 1982. Smaller VF400 and VF500 v-fours followed together with the range-topping VF1000F and VF1000R models, the latter - a limited edition 'race replica' - distinguished by its gear-driven (as opposed to chain-driven) overhead camshafts. The VF1000R was intended to continue the racetrack successes of the CB1100R and was as well finished and equipped as its illustrious predecessor, featuring a quick-release front wheel and Honda's Pro-Link rear suspension among other innovations. In the event, the big VF was too heavy to cut it on the track but nevertheless made one hell of a good sports-tourer for the road. Exclusive, costly (around 70% more expensive than a Kawasaki GPz1100 in 1985!) and fast (150mph-plus) the VF1000R sold in correspondingly small numbers and today is highly sought after by collectors.

This example's old/current V5C Registration Certificates state: "Declared new in GB by independent importer" and record the date of first UK registration as 15th January 1991. Our private vendor purchased the Honda from a private owner in June 2005. Kept indoors and cherished, the Honda was ridden sparingly initially, taking in various outings and shows per year. However, as the vendor has grown older he has become less pliable and also suffers from sciatica; he now finds riding less comfortable, hence the decision to sell.

The vendor has continued to maintain his motorcycles in full working order, starting and running them on a short private drive twice a year, with regular changes of oil, filters, brake fluid, etc (see file for dates). The machine has been run exclusively on Shell V Power petrol with fuel stabiliser added. A video of it running may be viewed on the Bonhams website. Prospective purchasers must satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's history, originality, authenticity, mechanical condition, mileage and completeness (or otherwise) prior to bidding. The private plate 'C16 VFR' is included in the sale.

Accompanying documents include the following:
