This Lot has arrived in the UK from overseas under Temporary Admission. Shippio Ltd must automatically uplift this Lot after the auction, complete all post sale import or export customs administration, and store this Lot until it is customs cleared. A compulsory fee of £350 + VAT will be added to the buyer's invoice for this. This Lot cannot be collected from the auction venue by the purchaser or any alternative transporter.
If the Lot is to stay in the UK or is not exported within 90 days of sale, Import VAT at 5% on the hammer price is payable.
Seeking to expand its model range, which hitherto had consisted of lightweights, in 1956 Yamaha began work on its first '250': the YD1. Yamaha's first twin-cylinder design, the YD1 engine was unusual in having its inlet port opening directly into the crankcases, rather than the cylinders. The clutch was mounted on the left-hand end of the gearbox main-shaft and was a particularly efficient design; bizarrely, Yamaha would abandon the YD1 clutch in favour of a succession of inferior arrangements before returning to it ten years later. The engine and its integral four-speed gearbox were carried beneath a pressed steel spine frame, an arrangement favoured by many of Yamaha's rivals, while the drive chain was fully enclosed. Running gear was conventional for the period. Introduced partway through 1957 and in production for less than two years, the YD1 would turn out to be a considerable success, helping Yamaha to establish itself as the 'Number 2' Japanese manufacturer behind Honda by 1959.
This landmark early Yamaha is presented in restored condition and currently displays a total of 33 kilometres on the odometer, which may well be the distance covered since the rebuild (the engine turns over).
Following a period of inactivity, this motorcycle will require recommissioning and/or restoration to a greater or lesser extent before returning to the road and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's completeness, history, authenticity, originality and mechanical condition prior to bidding.
