The Birmingham Small Arms Company first experimented with powered two-wheelers in the latter years of the 19th Century and then again in 1905. These first motorcycles made by BSA used proprietary engines such as the Belgian Minerva, and it was not until 1910 that the firm introduced a BSA designed and built machine. The first model to feature the marque's distinctive green and cream tank colours was a 499cc (3½hp) sidevalve single, which was soon complemented by a 557cc (4¼hp) long-stroke version, built initially with single-speed belt drive transmission and later with a three-speed countershaft gearbox in the case of the Model K, to which the Model H added chain final drive. BSA continued to offer a comprehensive range of sidevalve models in all capacities well into the 1930s despite the introduction of modern, overhead-valve models such as the 'Sloper' to its line-up.
Previously registered in the UK as 'KC 6322', this charming BSA 'flat tanker' was purchased by our vendor from a UK auction in December 1993. This sidevalve machine boasts a counter-shaft gearbox, all-chain drive, and dummy belt-rim brakes. It is an older restoration that has weathered somewhat, with paint peeling from the fuel tank, while the bulb horn and handlebar grips are perished (the engine turns over).
Offered from the vendor's important overseas museum collection, the machine comes with an old-style V5 registration document dating from 1994 and is on the HPI and DVLA database with no export marker, however the motorcycle is subject to the usual import channels. Accordingly prospective purchasers must satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's registration status prior to bidding and will be responsible for any post-purchase DVLA applications should they wish to attempt to retrieve the VRN.
Following a period of inactivity, this motorcycle will require recommissioning and/or restoration to a greater or lesser extent before returning to the road and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's completeness, history, authenticity, originality and mechanical condition prior to bidding.
It should be noted that the frame number's 'C' prefix does not appear to be mentioned in BSA records.
