1979 Ducati 864cc Mike Hailwood Replica Registration no. KTW 40V Frame no. 900020 Engine no. 089371

Sold for £17,250 inc. premium

1979 Ducati 864cc Mike Hailwood Replica
Registration no. KTW 40V
Frame no. 900020
Engine no. 089371

First registered on 30th September 1979, the Mike Hailwood Replica offered here is number '20' of the first hand-built batch of 200. It comes with an original Ducati Certificate of Authenticity (a very rare item) and retains its matching original frame ('900020') and original engine ('089371'). The vendor is the third owner but effectively the second, as the two previous were of the same family. He purchased the Ducati on 21st March 2014. On file is the original bill of sale to the vendor's late friend, Steve Fielder, from Haverhill Motorcycles in Suffolk dated 12th June 1979 for £2,868. All paperwork is included in the file.

'KTW 40V' has covered 21,873 miles from new. The machine is fitted with the single seat and comes with the additional dual seat as supplied when new. Other notable features include he following:

• Original one-piece fairing
• Original glassfibre tank cover
• Original Conti pipes in good condition
• Original Speedline wheels in good condition

The vendor advises that all chassis and bodywork is in original condition and as it was when the Ducati was purchased in 2014; it has never been restored. Small details confirm this, such as the way sections of the frame numbers are stamped before and after factory paint was applied, and the chunk missing out of the fairing where the original bikes were delivered with the kickstart pedal in the incorrect position.

In 2015 the engine underwent a fully documented professional rebuild by V-Twin Services in Consett, receiving new seals, bearings and fasteners (all parts that were replaced are included in the sale together with numerous photographs and receipts). The original patina of the engine cases has been preserved to maintain the unrestored look, and the engine is regularly started and said to run beautifully. The Ducati has covered zero miles while in the vendor's care, apart from a test ride for a few hundred yards after the engine rebuild. Recommissioning should include a new battery; an overhaul of the braking system; and replacing the fuel taps (new taps will be included in the sale).
