1989 Kawasaki 997cc ZX10
Registration no. F199 LAP
Frame no. ZXT00B-009387
Engine no. ZXT00A2036567

Kawasaki followed up its trend-setting GPz900R superbike of 1984 with the GPZ1000RX which, after only two years in production, was superseded by the ZX10. Introduced for 1988, the latter boasted an aluminium 'E-box' frame and was 35lb lighter than its steel-framed predecessor. The extensively revised 16-valve water-cooled engine now produced 137bhp, which was good enough for a top speed knocking on 170mph. UK customers had to make do with 'only' 125bhp courtesy of the industry's 'gentlemen's agreement' to restrict maximum power, though the missing horses were easily reinstated by modifying the carburettor tops to enable the slides to open fully. Bodywork was similar to the outgoing GPz's but featured a higher screen giving greater wind protection to the rider.

This example of Kawasaki's cutting-edge 1980s superbike was acquired by the private vendor in 1997 and has been used for summer riding only. The bike was maintained by the private vendor's brother, a highly accomplished motorcycle enthusiast with experience in rebuilding and maintenance, who sadly passed away recently, which is one of the reasons the private vendor is selling it. There are numerous receipts on file for spare parts purchased during the private vendor's ownership but none for servicing, for the reason stated above. The machine is offered with a V5C document, some expired MoTs, the aforementioned invoices, and an HPI report falsely listing a change of colour (the first registration and change dates are identical).
