Lot 301

Long-term single-family ownership, 1964 Honda 49cc CZ100 'Monkey Bike'

Long-term single-family ownership
1964 Honda 49cc CZ100 'Monkey Bike'
Registration no. CFN 39B (see text)
Frame no. S00424
Engine no. C100E 63971

With the launch of the CZ100 in 1960, Honda created the class of machine known as 'Monkey Bikes', so called because of their diminutive stature. The power unit was the C100 step-thru's reliable overhead-valve four-stroke single that incorporated a three-speed gearbox with automatic clutch. An ultra-short wheelbase, small wheels, and a vestigial fuel tank were all features of a machine which, in the case of the folding handlebar version, could fit into the boot of a car. Immensely popular as paddock transport the world over, they are currently much in vogue.

This Monkey Bike's first owner was actor Ian Ogilvy, best known as star of the ITV television series Return of the Saint (1978–79). Its owner (from 1966) was the vendor's mother, who bought it for him when he was 10 years old. The little Honda has been in the family's ownership ever since. We are advised by the private vendor that the engine and frame have been refurbished, and that the machine was last run towards the end of January 2026. The current odometer reading is 4,769 miles at the time of cataloguing/photography.

It should be noted that, while the machine displays the registration number 'CFN 39B' and comes with the original RF.60 logbook for the aforementioned VRN, the registration 'CFN 39B' is not recorded in the HPI/DVLA database – appearing to have lapsed, and the machine does not come with a current V5C document. Accordingly, prospective purchasers must satisfy themselves with regard to the validity/status of the vehicle's registration number prior to bidding. (It is the responsibility of the purchaser to apply for a vehicle registration document.) Prospective purchasers should also satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's completeness, history, authenticity, originality and mechanical condition prior to bidding. Accompanying paperwork consists of a Honda Monkey Driver's Manual; the aforementioned RF.60 logbook; and Two Wheel Restoration Services' May 2017 bill for the engine rebuild.
