Lot 293

1939 Excelsior 350cc Manxman Model H12 Project

1939 Excelsior 350cc Manxman Model H12 Project
Registration no. FKD 186
Frame no. J.S.M.55
Engine no. CXB263 (see text)

Although it had proved fast enough to win the 1933 Lightweight TT in Syd Gleave's hands, Excelsior's complex twin-cam, radial four-valve 'Mechanical Marvel' proved something of a disappointment thereafter, and at the end of the 1934 season the Tyseley firm opted for a simpler design: the Manxman. Like the Marvel, the Manxman engine was built by Blackburne, though increasing friction with its engine supplier forced Excelsior to take over production themselves early in 1936. A single-overhead-camshaft, two-valve design, the Manxman was built in 250, 350 and 500cc capacities. Road and race versions were offered, though the 500 was only ever marketed as a sports roadster. Although it never won a TT, the Manxman enjoyed considerable success in international racing and the Manx Grand Prix, Denis Parkinson winning the Lightweight race three times on the trot between 1936 and 1938. Notable Manxman developments included the switch to a shorter-stroke 250 engine in 1937 and the adoption (also applied to the 350) of an aluminium-alloy cylinder head with right-hand exhaust port.

This Excelsior Manxman was acquired by the vendor's late father, who commenced a restoration but unfortunately was unable to complete the project before he passed away. The machine is now offered as an unfinished restoration and will require further work before returning to the road. Prior to bidding, prospective bidders should satisfy themselves with regard to the completeness of the machine and the extent of the work required, as well as which parts may remain to be sourced; accordingly, this motorcycle is sold strictly as viewed.

It should be noted that the HPI report records the frame number correctly and date of first registration as 30th May 1939. However, the engine is listed as 'BRC101' and was of 250cc. It would appear that a 350cc engine is currently installed. The start date of the (current) late owner was 27th October 2016. Unfortunately no paperwork has been located for the machine. Prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves regarding this motorcycle's completeness, history, authenticity, originality and mechanical condition prior to bidding.

Saleroom notices

The registration mark FKD 186 is not considered attributable to this machine. The motorcycle is therefore offered without a registration number, and the VRN does not form part of its identity. Information has come to light that another Excelsior Manxman exists bearing frame number JSM55. This machine is supported by period photographs, its original engine and historic documentation, including an original buff logbook. Whilst the frame stamping appears period on this Lot, with no immediate evidence of restamping, the above suggests that the frame number may have been duplicated at the factory, and that the present machine has been assembled around the frame at a later date. The engine fitted to the Lot, CXB263, is a 1937 350cc unit recorded in the original Manxman register as at 1 January 1965. Accordingly, the Lot should be regarded as a composite of parts, and bidders must satisfy themselves as to the originality, authenticity, and correctness of the component parts prior to bidding.
