Lot 263

The David Plant Collection, 1956 BMW 538cc R50 'RS' Replica

The David Plant Collection
1956 BMW 538cc R50 'RS' Replica
Registration no. BMN 490 (Isle of Man)
Frame no. none stamped (555265 engraved to plaque)
Engine no. 533236

According to correspondence on file from BMW Mobile Tradition/BMW Group Archives, frame number '555265' was manufactured on 7th February 1956 and delivered on 18th May 1956 to BMW importer AFN Ltd, London. The motorcycle was previously UK registered as 'ALC 359A' before being registered on the Isle of Man as 'BMN 490'. The engine is also stamped 'R50RS' and 'Rennsport'.

A specification sheet details modifications from standard, noting the machine has been built to R50 'RS' specification, including Hoske low handlebars and Mega exhausts; Meier five-gallon fuel tank; Meier racing seat; lightweight glassfibre mudguards; rear-set footrests; air scoop to the front brake plate; modified controls; camshaft-driven rev counter; R50S camshaft; long-stroke sports crankshaft increasing capacity to 538cc; aluminium racing flywheel; carburettor velocity stacks; and modified final drive gearing.

The BMW has been taxed for road use in the Isle of Man (there is a tax disc dated August 2013). The machine also has three undated Isle of Man Grand Prix scrutineering stickers. It was formerly part of the Alan Payne (Payne Racing) stable, though it is believed it was only paraded rather than raced. The adapted Steib sidecar chassis has a plate which is stamped 'Steib Model B'.

The history file contains a quantity of documentation relating to the machine, including a handwritten receipt dated 9th September 2013, recording the current vendor's purchase of the BMW R50 motorcycle and sidecar from Mr Alan Payne of Port Erin, Isle of Man. There is also a purchase invoice from the previous owner dated June 1995. The machine also comes with an Isle of Man registration document confirming registration number 'BMN 490', make BMW, model R50, frame number '555265' and engine number '633236' (opposed to 533236), with Isle of Man registration dated 31st August 1999. Also on file are photocopies of old-style V5 registration documents listing previous owners, together with seven old MoT certificates dating from the 1990s. An owner's manual and other paperwork is included in the sale. It should be noted that no factory frame number is visible; instead, the machine carries an applied, hand-engraved plaque. The engine turns over.

Following a period of inactivity, this motorcycle will require recommissioning and/or restoration to a greater or lesser extent before returning to the road and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's completeness, history, authenticity, originality and mechanical condition prior to bidding.

If purchased by a UK resident, the Isle of Man Registration Certificate must be submitted to the DVLA with a V55/5 application to obtain a UK Registration Certificate. Motorcycles over 40 years old may be registered without an MOT upon submission of form V112 (Vehicle of Historic Interest declaration). Prospective purchasers must satisfy themselves as to the accuracy and completeness of the documentation and will be responsible for any subsequent registration formalities with the DVLA.
