The David Plant Collection, 1927 AJS 350cc Model H6 'Big Port'

The David Plant Collection
1927 AJS 350cc Model H6 'Big Port'
Registration no. DS 6790
Frame no. H100546 (see text)
Engine no. 100225 (to plaque)

After victory in the 1920 Isle of Man Junior TT, AJS's new overhead-valve 350 racer scored a memorable double the following year, Tom Sheard winning the Junior race and Howard Davies the Senior, the first time such a feat had been achieved on a '350'. Although it retained the 74x81mm bore and stroke dimensions of the 1920 Junior TT-winning prototype, the machine that brought AJS that remarkable Junior/Senior double victory had been extensively re-designed in the light of experience gained from racing, featuring a new cylinder head with reduced valve angle; a conventional three-speed gearbox (the 1920 machine employed a double engine sprocket to achieve six speeds); and a new, lower frame fitted with Druid forks. The production version made its debut in November 1922, delighting clubmen everywhere with its 'racer on the road' performance. A right-first-time design destined to achieve countless successes in the hands of privateers, the overhead-valve '350' AJS - latterly known as the 'Big Port' - changed only in detail before being superseded by a much revised M6 model for 1929.

Acquired by our vendor in 2002, the Big Port offered here is an older restoration that is in need of recommissioning and/or further restoration; it is presented in nicely mellowed condition and would benefit from detailed cleaning. The engine turns over. Accompanying paperwork includes old/current V5/V6C documents and two MoT certificates, the most recent of which expired in 2013. The motorcycle carries the factory‑stamped frame number H100546. However DVLA/HPI records list N00456, a discrepancy consistent with a transcription or mis-reading error. Prospective purchasers must satisfy themselves regarding the process and likelihood of updating the DVLA record.

Following a period of inactivity, this motorcycle will require recommissioning and/or restoration to a greater or lesser extent before returning to the road and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's completeness, history, authenticity, originality and mechanical condition prior to bidding.
