THE CAR OFFERED

Ford Racing introduced the Boss 302R in 2010, with production limited to approximately 50 examples, timed to mark the 40th anniversary of Parnelli Jones' 1970 Trans-Am championship season aboard a Boss 302 prepared by Bud Moore Engineering. The car was the direct successor to Ford's Mustang FR500C, a factory-built Grand-Am racer that had already claimed GS-class championships in 2005, 2008, and 2009. Notably, the Boss 302R arrived two full years ahead of the street-going Boss 302's return for the 2012 model year — the race car effectively launched the nameplate's revival before Ford brought Boss back to showrooms.

Offered as a turnkey competition car to teams contesting series such as the Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge (formerly the KONI Challenge), the Boss 302R1 designation distinguished cars equipped with the Grand-Am Homologation Package (M-FR500-BOSS R1) from the standard Boss 302R. Both were hand-built from the ground up by Multimatic Motorsports of Markham, Ontario, a firm with a long-standing record preparing championship-winning race cars for manufacturers worldwide. Rather than a converted road model, the car was purpose-designed and serialized for off-road, competition-only use — built around a stripped, seam-welded body shell fitted with a full roll cage, racing seat and harness, and dedicated competition electronics. Power came from a sealed, high-output naturally aspirated 5.0-liter four-valve DOHC V8, built specifically for competition use with an upgraded cooling system, a high-flow intake, and aggressive camshaft profiles tuned for the sustained high-rpm operation and reliability that endurance racing demands. This race engine shares its core architecture with, and predates, the 5.0-liter "Coyote" V8 subsequently introduced in the 2012 street Boss 302, which was rated at approximately 444 horsepower and 380 lb-ft in road-going form. Other competition equipment included a close-ratio six-speed transmission with an integral shifter, race-tuned KONI suspension dampers with recalibrated ABS, an upgraded brake package, aerodynamic aids, a competition exhaust system, and a high-speed-balanced, one-piece driveshaft.

Where many modern "tribute" specials exist largely as marketing exercises, the Boss 302R1 was conceived as a genuine competition tool, continuing Ford's long practice of turning the Mustang into a capable road racer — a lineage tracing directly back to the Trans-Am-winning Boss 302s of 1969 and 1970. Sold through Ford Racing in strictly limited numbers, it stands today among the most sought-after modern Mustang race cars, representing a genuine intersection of Boss heritage, Coyote-generation performance, and factory motorsport engineering.

Serial no. BOSS302R1-008 was delivered new on May 16, 2011, to Suburban Ford of Sterling Heights, Michigan at a price of $125,000, before passing into a private collection. Equipped with the Grand-Am Homologation Package (M-FR500-BOSS R1), it's offered as a rare, never-raced example, and presents in essentially as-delivered condition and is ready for its next caretaker.
