THE PROTOTYPE TECHNOLOGY GROUP

Prototype Technology Group (PTG Racing Inc.), run by Tom Milner of Winchester Virginia, was contracted by BMW of North America from 1995 through 2006, to serve as BMW's North American research and development racing team, which campaigned the BMW M3 in the racing series of IMSA, USRC, ALMS, SCCA World Challenge as well as Grand-AM.

Milner was a German-born engineer who immigrated to the US and spent decades building one of the most respected sports car programs in the country. He had over 30 years of experience across IMSA, SCCA, and NASCAR, with early accomplishments including a partnership with Bill Scott Racing that produced 10 championships in Formula Vee, Super Vee, and Formula Ford from 1967 to 1984.

He set up on his own in 1988 as Tom Milner Racing, then changed the team's name to PTG ahead of the BMW program — he arrived at the name by reversing the letters of IMSA's GTP class.

PTG represented BMW North America's factory-backed sports car racing effort in much the same way that Pratt & Miller came to define Corvette Racing. Between 1995 and 2006, the team amassed an extraordinary 53 victories from 118 starts while securing 14 championships across IMSA, USRRC, ALMS, and Grand-Am competition. The E46 M3 GT program represented the pinnacle of that partnership. Introduced for the 2000 season, the cars immediately emerged as formidable contenders in the fiercely competitive GT category, taking the fight directly to the dominant Porsche 911 GT3-R on circuits throughout North America and Europe.

Championships included four sports-car manufacturer titles for BMW, four team titles, and three driver championships.

The team closed its doors in 2013. Tom's son Tommy Milner went on to become a factory Corvette/BMW endurance driver in his own right — a true racing family legacy.

THE CAR OFFERED

Among the most significant BMW competition cars ever constructed in North America, BMW Motorsport E46 GT chassis 00/001 is far more than the first example of its type—it is the very chassis from which the entire E46 M3 racing program was developed. Constructed by Tom Milner's Prototype Technology Group (PTG) at the direction of BMW of North America, this development car preceded every subsequent E46 GT and served as the benchmark against which the remainder of the program would be measured.

Chassis 00/001 was entrusted to three of the era's most respected names in GT racing. Le Mans legend and longtime BMW factory driver Hans-Joachim Stuck shared driving duties with the immensely talented Boris Said and future ALMS GT standout Johannes van Overbeek. Together, they campaigned this chassis at Sebring, Charlotte, Silverstone, and the Nürburgring, giving the car an international competition history of genuine significance.

Following its tenure with PTG, the car was sold to Alegra Motorsport, where it continued its professional racing life in Grand-Am competition. In endurance trim, it competed in some of North America's premier events, including the Rolex 24 At Daytona, the 12 Hours of Sebring, and the Six Hours of The Glen before eventually retiring from frontline competition and briefly appearing in Historic Sportscar Racing events. During this period, the car underwent numerous livery changes and modifications to comply with evolving regulations, obscuring its identity as the original PTG development chassis.

That changed in 2009 when the late David Paul of Allentown, Pennsylvania—a close friend of noted BMW racer and constructor David Moore—set out to acquire a PTG BMW for HSR competition. During a pre-purchase inspection at David Hinton's workshop in Tampa, Florida, Moore made an extraordinary discovery: the car under consideration was none other than chassis 00/001 itself, the original PTG E46 development car.

The discovery prompted a decision that went far beyond conventional race preparation. Rather than preparing the BMW for contemporary historic competition, the new custodians committed to a painstaking restoration to its original ALMS specification and livery. The sole deviation from factory configuration was the retention of the enlarged 3.4-liter engine, developed by PTG's Chris Fletcher from the original 3.2-liter unit to enhance competitiveness during the car's later career.

To ensure complete accuracy, Moore enlisted Scott Clarke, the car's original crew chief during its ALMS campaigns, to advise on the distinctions between its original configuration and subsequent Grand-Am modifications. The restoration became something of an archaeological exercise, revealing that the car remarkably retained its original bodywork, engine, gearbox, drivetrain, suspension, and numerous other components from its period competition life. Most notably, it still possessed the unique rear "M" firewall exclusive to chassis 00/001, a feature never carried over to later examples.

Every detail was recreated from original drawings and period photography. The ALMS-specification aero exits in the front fenders, filled during the Grand-Am years, were reopened to reveal the original carbon-fiber structure beneath. The lightweight PTG door frames and Lexan glazing were restored, while the distinctive angled M5-derived radiator and bespoke intake ducting were faithfully reinstated. Moore also enlisted renowned IMSA and ALMS photographer Bruce Miller, whose extensive archive of period imagery proved invaluable in documenting the car's original appearance. Ultimately, the restoration team chose to return the BMW to the livery it carried during the 2000 Bitburger/AvD 1000 Kilometer Nürburgring race in the Le Mans Series.

Upon completion, chassis 00/001 made a fitting public return when it was displayed at The Quail in 2009 as part of the Hans Stuck Tribute, honoring one of the men most closely associated with its early career.

Today, the car is presented in that same Nürburgring specification and livery, accompanied by comprehensive documentation supporting its identity and provenance. No other BMW E46 M3 GT occupies the position this chassis holds in the history of BMW motorsport in North America. It is the first of the line—the development car that established the standard for every E46 GT that followed—and survives today as one of the most important and carefully preserved artifacts of BMW's modern American racing history.
