THE FERRARI DINO 246 GT
A 2.4-liter version on a longer wheelbase - the 246 GT - replaced the original Dino 206 in late 1969. Built by Scaglietti, the body was now steel, and the cylinder block cast-iron rather than aluminum, but the bigger engine's increased power - 195bhp at 7,600rpm - adequately compensated for the weight gain. A Targa-top version, the 246 GTS, followed in 1972. The Dino 246 was built in three series: 'L', 'M' and 'E', these designations reflecting detail changes in the specification. Of the three, the M-series is by far the rarest, being produced during the early months of 1971 only. Changes from the preceding L-series included a 30mm increase in rear track; five-bolt fixing for the road wheels; internal trunk release; seat-mounted headrests; and various minor improvements to the engine and gearbox. The final 'E' series incorporated all the changes made to its predecessors together with further improvements to the engine and gearbox and numerous other more minor details.
While not quite as fast in a straight line as its larger V12-engined stablemates, the nimble Dino was capable of showing almost anything a clean pair of heels over twisty going. Truly a driver's car par excellence and still highly regarded today.
THE CAR OFFERED
Completed on November 10, 1972, chassis 04382 was delivered new in the timeless and highly desirable color combination of Rosso Chiaro over Pelle Beige, a specification it proudly retains today. Imported to the United States through William F. Harrah's renowned Ferrari distributorship, Modern Classic Motors of Reno, Nevada, the Dino was subsequently supplied to Steve Griswold & Co. of Berkeley, California. Its first owner, Page Roos of San Mateo, California would enjoy long-term stewardship of the car for well over a decade, establishing an early history of careful ownership.
According to the accompanying Marcel Massini Report, the Dino remained registered in California for nearly half a century before relocating to Canada in 2021. That same year, its prior owner embarked upon an extensive mechanical restoration performed by Ferrari Classiche-certified technicians, with expenditures approaching $80,000. The work included replacement of key mechanical and electrical components, including the shifter assembly, wiring, radiator, blower motors, thermostat, and numerous gaskets, while cosmetic refinements encompassed restored chrome trim, refinished brake calipers, underbody detailing, and new tires. Most importantly, this meticulous attention to originality and authenticity culminated in the car earning Ferrari Classiche Certification in January 2023.
Acquired by the current owner in March of 2024, it has been driven sparingly but received an extensive, engine out service and detailing that was only completed weeks before the auction. Five pages of detailed invoices layout the work completed including removing the drivetrain, rebuilding the transmission, replacement of gaskets and seals in both the engine and transmission, rebuilding the carburetors, replacing hoses, engine tune up, brake and coolant system flushes, deep cleaning of the engine bay and drivetrain componentry, and more. Following the extensive rebuild, service, and tune-up, the car received a thorough paint correction and detailing. The invoices for work completed total over $64,000.
Accompanying the Dino are its coveted Classiche Red Book, badge, and libretto, confirming its conformity to factory specifications. Retaining its matching-numbers engine and transmission, chassis 04382 is additionally offered with its original owner's manuals, warranty card, and tool kit. Beautifully preserved in its original color scheme and recognized by Ferrari's most rigorous certification program, this exceptional Dino 246 GT presents a compelling opportunity to acquire one of Maranello's most celebrated and enduring designs—equally suited to concours presentation, touring events, or spirited enjoyment on the open road.
