THE CAR OFFERED

Chassis no. 128.030.10.003512 retains several rare, original trim components unique to the Cabriolet, including its fascia trim, gauges, Becker radio and correct speaker panel, and headrests, all in good original condition. The rear bench seat — a correct factory option fitted in place of the alternative luggage shelf — is present, well suited to parade use.

The car benefitted from a full nut-and-bolt restoration approximately seventeen years ago, carried out by a small independent shop in Blenheim, Ontario, a noted center for restoration work of this caliber and one that had previously restored a Pebble Beach entrant for the consignor. At that time the car's original grey and red color and trim combination was changed to the black over tan leather scheme seen today — a correct and period-appropriate combination for the model.

Following its restoration, the Cabriolet was shown to great appreciation at the Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance in Michigan and was also driven on the Woodward Dream Cruise without mechanical or overheating issues. Trailered to all shows and events since its restoration, the car has accumulated only some 300 additional miles atop the 15,659 shown on its odometer.

The 220 SE Cabriolet represents the final and most refined evolution of Mercedes-Benz's celebrated Ponton series, combining hand-crafted coachwork with advanced engineering at an important juncture in the marque's postwar history. Its 2,195cc single-overhead-camshaft inline six, fed by Bosch mechanical fuel injection, produced 115 horsepower and was paired with a four-speed manual transmission (automatic optional), giving effortless high-speed touring capability in keeping with Mercedes-Benz's reputation for engineering excellence.

Designed not as an outright sports car but as a refined grand tourer, the 220 SE Cabriolet paired independent front suspension and a swing-axle rear with robust unitary construction, endowing it with excellent ride quality and composure, while its understated styling embodied the restrained elegance for which the marque became known.

Offered here with known ownership history and accompanied with its original tool roll, first aid kit and owner's manuals, this 220 SE Cabriolet presents a compelling opportunity to acquire one of the definitive luxury convertibles of the late 1950s — equally at home on the concours lawn, on tour, or simply enjoyed on the open road.
