THE MORGAN PLUS 4 SUPER SPORTS

Introduced in 1960, the Morgan Plus 4 Super Sports was developed by Peter Morgan and renowned engineer and racing driver Chris Lawrence as the marque's FIA homologation model. The Plus 4 Super Sports model was catalogued from 1962 by the Morgan factory. Just 101 examples were built, each featuring lightweight aluminum bodywork and a specially prepared 'Lawrencetune' Triumph TR3 engine with a gas-flowed cylinder head, high-lift camshaft, twin Weber carburetors and balanced internals. A bonnet scoop accommodated the Weber carburetors, while an oil cooler and front disc brakes complemented the performance upgrades. The model quickly earned an impressive competition record, including class victories at Sebring and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

THE CAR OFFERED

One of only 101 factory-built Plus 4 Super Sports, chassis 4996 is distinguished by its rare early 'high-line' aluminum body. By virtue of being completed in November 1961, it is believed to be one of the very first of the eleven 'high-line' Super Sports built between late 1961 and mid-1963. It was delivered in Flame over black to Morgan's Vancouver distributor before being sold new in Seattle, where it competed in ICSCC events. Acquired by its long-term owner in 1976, the car underwent an extensive restoration over more than a decade. In 2005, the original Lawrencetune engine was restored to its original Super Sports specification, producing nearly 130 horsepower, while a five-speed transmission and carefully considered reliability upgrades (new generator, water pump, starter motor, LED and Lucas lights, electronic ignition, powdercoated frame and steel body parts, cut-off switch and a hand-crafted dash out of Oregon Myrtle wood) enhanced its reliability and usability. Accompanied by some of its original components and extensive documentation, this early Plus 4 Super Sports is a rare and highly significant example of Morgan's celebrated competition-derived road car.
