THE CAR OFFERED
Commissioned as Edition 001, this example stands as the inaugural and defining reference of the ten-car 'City Black' series, a strictly limited closed set. Within such a series, the first edition carries particular significance, serving as the benchmark against which all subsequent examples are measured and typically regarded as the most important and highly sought-after work within the group.
The 'City Black' series was conceived as a collaboration between Balmoral Defender and CFDA award-winning designer Todd Snyder, bringing together mechanical re-engineering and a disciplined, design-led approach to material and tone. The result is a highly resolved vehicle that reflects both performance capability and clear authorship.
Finished in a bespoke multi-stage Niagara Gray, the exterior presents a restrained, micro-metallic surface developed to emphasize the Defender's proportions and stance. This is complemented by a galvanized chassis, upgraded suspension, and sawtooth alloy wheels, along with a Sonnenland mohair soft top with UV lining.
The interior is executed in line with Todd Snyder's signature tonal discipline, expressed through a considered palette of layered neutrals and refined material contrast. Seating is trimmed in premium Italian leather supplied by LeatMeSpecial, with bespoke quilting unique to the series. This treatment extends across the door panels, dashboard, and interior surfaces, all finished in hand-stitched leather. Modern amenities, including air conditioning and a discreetly integrated Bluetooth audio system, are incorporated without disrupting the vehicle's overall coherence.
Mechanically, the vehicle benefits from a comprehensive ground-up restoration and is powered by a 6.2-liter Chevrolet LT1 V8 engine, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission calibrated for modern drivability. Upgraded suspension, Alcon disc brakes, power steering, and enhanced sound insulation contribute to a markedly refined driving experience.
The build was completed across multiple locations, with primary restoration work undertaken in England, interior fabrication in Europe and the United States, and final assembly and engine integration completed in the United States. In total, the process represents over 2,000 hours of work.
As the inaugural example of a strictly limited production, this Defender occupies a clear position within the evolving market for design-led, highly specified collector vehicles, offering both usability and strong relevance within a closed and authored series.
