Lot 141

An Automobile Club of Great Britain and Ireland silver medal awarded to J D Siddeley, 1901,

An Automobile Club of Great Britain and Ireland silver medal awarded to J D Siddeley, 1901,

struck in unmarked silver, the reverse struck and engraved "Awarded to J D Siddeley on his successfully completing the trial on his own 12HP Daimler, Glasgow International Exhibition 1901 Automobile Club's 500 Mile Trial of Motor Vehicles", the obverse depicting Hancock's Infant, the medal 35mm diameter, (slightly worn with 3 dents to the rim).

Footnotes

In 1901, John Davenport Siddeley was the Managing Director of the Clipper Tyre Company. He was an avid motorist who famously drove in early events to prove the quality of British vehicles and tyres. He later went on to form the Siddeley Autocar Company, manage Wolseley, and eventually establish the legendary Armstrong Siddeley luxury car and aviation manufacturing company.

Held concurrently with the Glasgow International Exhibition, the 1901 500-Mile Trial took place over five days in September. Cars had to travel arduous daily routes from Glasgow to places like Edinburgh, Dundee, and back. Strict marks were deducted for any breakdown, puncture, or unscheduled stop.
