Few Japanese performance cars of the 1990s achieved the international recognition of the Toyota Supra, and fewer still can claim a direct connection to one of the era's most ambitious Japanese tuning projects. Offered here is a 1993 Toyota Supra RZ Hardtop Coupe, distinguished as one of two A80 Supra's built by legendary Japanese tuning house BLITZ for its celebrated Nürburgring record attempt of 1997.
Developed during a period when Japan's premier tuning houses were beginning to demonstrate that highly modified Japanese performance cars could compete with the world's most celebrated European machinery, the BLITZ Supra program represented an ambitious attempt to establish a new benchmark for a street-based performance automobile. Beginning in 1996, BLITZ embarked upon an extensive development program centered around the JZA80 Supra, with the ultimate objective of taking the car to Germany and proving its capabilities on the formidable Nürburgring Nordschleife.
Two examples were subsequently sent to Germany in 1997 for the record attempt, including the example offered here. Known within the BLITZ program as a Nürburgring demo and development car, this Supra represents a significant piece of the company's competition-inspired development history and the formative years of Japan's internationally recognized tuning culture.
The project became known as the BLITZ 753 Supra, a name derived from the original target of achieving a Nürburgring lap in 7 minutes and 53 seconds, the laptime achieved by the Nissan Skyline R33 GT-R. Through extensive development, BLITZ transformed the Supra into a formidable high-performance machine, with substantial engine, turbocharging, chassis, braking, suspension, aerodynamic, and drivetrain modifications. The resulting automobile was capable of approximately 750 horsepower and was engineered specifically to withstand the unique demands of the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
In September 1997, German test driver Herbert Schürg piloted the sister BLITZ Supra to an officially recorded Nürburgring Nordschleife lap of 7:49.411, surpassing the project's original target. The achievement placed the BLITZ Supra at the forefront of contemporary street-tuned performance cars and was reported as quicker than the 7:52 lap achieved by the Gemballa 993 Le Mans Biturbo. BLITZ subsequently regarded the accomplishment as a landmark moment in the company's history.
The significance of this car extends beyond its mechanical specification. The early JZA80 chassis, manual transmission, Japanese-market RZ specification, and documented association with BLITZ's Nürburgring program place it within an important chapter of Japanese performance-car history. At a time when the world's automotive establishment was dominated by European supercars and purpose-built performance machinery, BLITZ demonstrated that a heavily developed Japanese production car could challenge established benchmarks on one of the world's most demanding circuits.
Today, the BLITZ Nürburgring Supra program is regarded as one of the defining achievements of Japan's golden era of tuning. This Toyota offers collectors the unusual opportunity to acquire not simply a highly modified Toyota Supra, but a car directly associated with the development program behind one of the most famous Japanese Nürburgring exploits of the 1990s. Today, the car is calibrated on a modern ECU, for better drivability, with the original ECU included with the car. This A80 has been in a long term collectors custody, being seldomly driven, keeping the mileage quite low on this legendary JDM demo car.
For the collector of Japanese performance cars, significant tuning history, and the rapidly emerging category of historically important, modified automobiles, this BLITZ Nürburgring Supra represents a particularly compelling survivor of an extraordinary period in automotive history.
