1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Roadster with Hardtop

A right-hand drive, automatic transmission model, this 280 SL 'Pagoda' was purchased new in 1970 as a UK car and shipped to Malaysia by Air Marshal Datuk, who had it flown there in an RMAF C130 transport aircraft. On arrival the Mercedes was registered as 'WW2376'. In 1980 one W F Edgar bought the car in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where an extensive restoration was carried out by the local Mercedes-Benz dealer, Cycle & Carriage Bintang BHD. Mr Edgar remained employed by the Royal Malaysian Air Force until 1994 when he brought the Mercedes back to the UK and registered it as 'PMO 298X'. During Mr Edgar's ownership in Malaysia the Mercedes saw relatively little use. The history file contains numerous servicing and maintenance invoices for the period 1970-1982 together with others for the period 1982-2012 issued by multiple garages.

The car is finished in Silver Grey Metallic (Code 180G) but originally was painted in Horizon Blue (304 G) as shown on the factory code plate. During UK ownership, the registration was changed to the current mark, 'DPC 105H'. In 2012, the engine was changed for a rebuilt unit from Crewe Engines Ltd (see receipt for £4,222 on file).

At some point the Pagoda was purchased for a car collection in Stafford, where it stayed for many years. While there it was repainted again, but not in the correct silver. In May 2023, our vendor purchased the car and decided to undertake a body restoration with SL Shop. The rebuild took 18 months to complete at a cost of over £100,000, which included a full engine tune, a refurbished injection pump, and new blue carpets in the correct twin-loop design. The hardtop was painted gloss black, as were the hubcaps, while the soft-top was kept in blue to match the leather upholstery. All invoices covering this work are in the history file, detailing parts and labour.

Beautifully presented and said to drive very nicely, this collectible 280 SL Pagoda comes with a comprehensive history file documenting its early life in Malaysia and subsequently back in the UK, including numerous bills and all old MoT certificates.
