Ford created a new class of car almost overnight with the introduction of the Mustang sports coupé part way through the 1964 season, catching the rest of the US auto industry off guard. Brainchild of the late Lee Iacocca, the Mustang is one of the most remarkable automotive success stories of modern times and arguably the pinnacle of his long career with Ford. Aimed at the affluent young, for whom a car was as much a lifestyle statement as means of transport, the Mustang succeeded brilliantly, achieving sales in excess of a quarter million by the end of '64. a staggering 524,791 sales in 1965. The secret of the Mustang's success was a broad appeal that extended beyond the target market thanks to a great value-for-money package combining sporty looks, decent economy and brisk performance, especially when fitted with the 289 V8, as with this car.

Dating from the first full year of production, this 289-engined, automatic transmission Ford Mustang Convertible was purchased in 2000 by none other than famed actor Ewan McGregor. He saw the car in Sydney, Australia while on site filming 'Moulin Rouge!' and knew it had to come home with him. The car had previously been converted to RHD while out there, possibly early in its life as was common in Australia, which made it perfect for British roads. He used it for many years, with road trips to the south of France, as well as of course through Scotland. Time spent in the United States and a few small jobs to be rectified with the car meant it took a back seat for some time. A job that had begun with fixing spongy brakes in the meantime had progressed into extensive restoration works! Little used in recent years, a move to Perthshire meaning less need for a convertible, and with only some 2,000 miles covered since 2015, it comes fresh from restoration and finished in fabulous Wimbledon White over blue interior.
