c.1969 Suzuki Fronte 360 Deluxe Microcar

c.1969 Suzuki Fronte 360 Deluxe Microcar
Registration no. Not UK registered
Chassis no. LC10 183605

Based on the Suzulight van, the first of Suzuki's Fronte family arrived in March 1962 in the form of the Suzulight TLA saloon. The latter was built to conform with the Japanese government's Kei car regulations, which placed limits on a vehicle's physical size, engine capacity and performance. Intended for use within Japan's crowded city centres, the affordable Kei cars enjoyed lower tax and insurance rates and were popular with elderly and novice motorists alike. Suzuki already had plenty of experience of building two-stroke engines for its motorcycles, and this kind of power unit was used in the Fronte; an air-cooled twin, it displaced 360cc - the maximum permitted by the then current regulations - and drove the front wheels via a three-speed manual transmission. There was independent suspension all round.

In March 1967 the Suzulight Fronte was superseded by the Suzuki Fronte (LC10), which featured a restyled bodyshell and rear-mounted three-cylinder engine, the latter driving via a four-speed manual gearbox. The newcomer was an instant hit, soon exceeding its 3,000-per-month production target and finding some 8,000 customers monthly throughout its life. Production ceased in October 1970.

This LC10's accompanying paperwork consists of a copy magazine article on the model (in Japanese).
