c.1966 Mazda P360 Carol Saloon

c.1966 Mazda P360 Carol Saloon
Registration no. Not UK registered
Chassis no. KPDA 250923
Engine no. DA-1616

Introduced in 1962, the Mazda Carol was a two-door saloon based on the original P360 coupé of 1960 - the Japanese manufacturer's first passenger car. The P360 (and P360 Carol) was built to conform with the Japanese government's kei car regulations, which placed limits on a vehicle's physical size, engine capacity and performance.

Rear-mounted, the P360's power unit was 356cc v-twin (360cc being the Kei car's upper capacity limit at that time) but the Carol was blessed with a more powerful 358cc water-cooled overhead-valve four, one of the smallest four-cylinder engines ever to power a production automobile. Power (maximum 18PS) reached the ground via a four-speed gearbox. The body/chassis was of unitary construction and there was torsion-bar independent suspension all round, the latter affording a most comfortable ride. Two- and four-door versions were made. Well engineered, albeit somewhat heavy as a result, the Carol was an instant hit, capturing over 60% of the Kei market in its first year.

Apparently a two-owner car when sourced for the Collection in 2003, this Carol is finished in Light grey with a blue roof and is presented in very good original order. Photographs on file show the car as found/bought. Kept on static display/storage since acquisition, the car will require recommissioning before further use. Original handbook included.
