c.1965 Toyota Publica 700 DX Saloon

c.1965 Toyota Publica 700 DX Saloon
Registration no. Not UK registered
Chassis no. 4-UP10-100568
Engine no. U96377

Introduced in 1961, the Publica was Toyota's response the Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry's concept of a 'national car'. MITI's brief specified weight below 400kg (880lb), a maximum speed of over 100km/h (62mph), fuel consumption of 85mpg at a steady 60km/h (37mph), and exceptional reliability: no breakdowns or repairs for at least 100,000km (62,000 miles). Toyota's design team had been inspired by the Citroën 2CV, and although they adopted a 2CV-like front-mounted air-cooled boxer engine (of 697cc), opted for conventional rear-wheel drive transmission rather than the French car's front-drive layout. A two-door four-seat saloon affording generous boot space, the Publica featured double-wishbone front suspension and semi-elliptic springing at the rear. Although available with two doors only, the Publica was built in a variety of body styles including saloon, coupé, station wagon, pickup and convertible. Development continued through the original P10 design via the P20 and P30 series before production ceased in 1978 when the Publica was superseded by the Starlet hatchback and Corolla saloon.
