In the mid-1950s, FIAT boss Gianni Agnelli and shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis were photographed during the summer season in the best known Italian and Côte d'Azur holiday resorts travelling in small customised FIATs. They started the fashion for these cars, which typically were built without a roof, doors and side windows, and were fitted with waterproof wicker seats. They were know as 'spiaggina' (beach cars) and many Italian coachbuilders, including Pinin Farina, Ghia, Moretti and Savio, built them in small numbers for their VIP clients.

Our vendor purchased this Beetle in Florida in 2022 and imported it into Europe. He then commissioned the well-respected workshop AZNOM in Monza to turn it into a beach car, very much in the style of how Carrozzeria Ghia transformed FIAT 500 into the Jolly Beach Car. The engine was rebuilt at the same time, and overall the car presents beautifully - the attention to detail is simply astonishing. Most elegantly finished in light blue with a light grey interior boasting beautiful woven rope seats with matching carpets, this unique VW Beach Car promises lots of fun for the coming summer months. Offered with the old US title and EU import documents, it is an opportunity not to be missed and perfect for the Côte d'Azur.

Au milieu des années 1950, le patron de FIAT, Gianni Agnelli, et le magnat du transport maritime Aristote Onassis ont été photographiés pendant la saison estivale dans les stations balnéaires les plus célèbres d'Italie et de la Côte d'Azur, à bord de petites FIAT personnalisées. Ils ont lancé la mode de ces voitures, qui étaient généralement construites sans toit, sans portes et sans vitres latérales, et équipées de sièges en osier imperméables. On les appelait « spiaggina » (voitures de plage) et de nombreux carrossiers italiens, dont Pinin Farina, Ghia, Moretti et Savio, en ont construit en petit nombre pour leurs clients VIP.

Notre vendeur a acheté cette Coccinelle en Floride en 2022 et l'a importée en Europe. Il a ensuite chargé le célèbre atelier AZNOM de Monza de la transformer en voiture de plage, dans le même esprit que la Carrozzeria Ghia avait transformé la FIAT 500 en Jolly Beach Car. Le moteur a été rénové à cette occasion, et l'ensemble de la voiture est magnifique, le souci du détail est tout simplement stupéfiant. Avec sa finition très élégante en bleu clair et son intérieur gris clair doté de magnifiques sièges en corde tressée assortis aux tapis, cette VW Beach Car unique promet de nombreux moments de plaisir pour les mois d'été à venir. Proposée avec l'ancien titre américain et les documents d'importation européens, c'est une opportunité à ne pas manquer, parfaite pour la Côte d'Azur.

From 28 June 2025, the import into the EU of non-EU property of a certain age (and in some categories above a certain value) is subject to additional requirements. Under the relevant EU Regulation, it is the Buyer's sole responsibility to assess whether any Lot meets the criteria for import into the EU. The refusal of any required Import Licence or Importer Statement, or any delay in obtaining such Licence or Statement shall not give rise to the rescission or cancellation of any Sale, nor allow any delay in making full payment for the Lot.
Buyers' Premium and Charges
Like the vast majority of auctioneers Bonhams charge a Buyer's Premium on the Hammer Price of each Lot purchased and this is subject to VAT. Some lots may also be subject to VAT on the Hammer Price and these lots will be clearly marked with a symbol (†, Ω, *) printed beside the lot number.
For Automobilia the Buyer's Premium is 28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price; 27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,001 up to and including £800,000; 21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,001 up to and including £4,500,000 and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,001.
For Motor Cars and Vehicle Registration Numbers the Buyer's Premium will be 15% on the first £500,000 of the hammer price of each Lot, and 12% on the balance thereafter.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% + VAT of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
VAT at the standard rate is payable on the Buyers Premium by all Buyers, unless otherwise stated.
