That Mercedes-Benz chose the 1954 New York Auto Show to introduce the 190SL shows its jet-setting aspirations for its new baby roadster. Unquestionably sprinkled with stardust from the all-conquering 300SL supercar, the W121 maintained the glamorous appearances and stoic build quality, but employed more conventional underpinnings borrowed from the Ponton saloon. The intricate tube-frame of the 300SL was swapped for a pressed-steel monocoque, and a 1900cc single-cam inline four was more in keeping with daily use. The 190SL was a hit and cemented Mercedes-Benz as the ultimate maker of touring roadsters, and today the 190SL remains a glamourous and thoroughly usable classic.
This Mercedes-Benz 190 SL was delivered new and first registered in Germany on 23rd May 1960. Its original Kraftfahrzeugbrief (registration document) from 1960 provides detailed about its ownership history, showing five successive German owners prior to the current owner, who acquired the car in 2012.
The file that accompanies the car, in addition to the German registration document already mentioned, includes an original old Fahrzeugschein; original instruction book, invoices and handwritten service notes from 1998 to 2018 recording of regular servicing, often carried out at Mercedes-Benz. It also reveals that a correct-type engine was installed in the early 1990s and a full respray in the original colour was carried out in 1998. The file contains a technical inspection report from 2012 highlighting a minor defect and an appraisal report from 1991, just before the acquisition by the penultimate owner.
While it has been maintained over the years, it has recently been kept on static display. As such, recommissioning will be required before this timeless classic is returned to the road.
