In the 1970s, the Swedish government was in need of official vehicles, and a rich and successful clientele were wishing to drive a car of their social level, but a Swedish one. Volvo was the logical choice and developed the 264 TE, based on a stretched 264 chassis fitted with the PRV V6, and built by Bertone in Italy. The market was small but was interesting for the company's image. In the meantime, the Cold War was to its paroxysm, Germany was divided and even if RDA was intimately liaised to the URSS, Erich Honecker, president of the RDA was not planning to use a GAZ or a ZIL as his official car. As it was unthinkable to go and buy some Mercedes-Benz or even worse a Cadillac from the "West", the list of possible candidates was short. Indeed, there was not so many car manufacturers located in neutral countries and building some solid and convenient limousines. Volvo and Sweden were chosen by the RDA to equipe the government and an important part of the mere 335 examples built were sold to the East Germans.

This 1977 example has been built during the Bertone era before production was allocated to the Swedish coachbuilder Nilsson. We do not know of this Volvo's early years before it was registered in Dortmund in 1992. Bought by the current owner in December 1992, this Volvo is now showing 34,560 km on its odometer. Fitted with a velvet grey interior, this 264 TE is equipped with curtains around the rear windows and flag holders in the front. Sold with its Fahrzeugbrief (German registration document), this Volvo is also coming with tools and first aid kit and would require recommissioning prior to use.
