Spring 1951 saw Mercedes-Benz launch the W187 generation of luxury car, available initially as a saloon and convertible and later as an exclusive coupé. A development of 1949's W170, the W187 was criticised in period for retaining the traditional looks, with recessed and streamlined headlamps being the only visual clue. But behind that chromed radiator grille now sat the M180 2195cc straight-six, the first all-new Mercedes engine in over a decade and an important return to six-cylinder power for the first time post-war. The high-tech engine propelled the old-fashioned car to over 140km/h, with an even higher compression version developed for the Ponton offered in the final years of production. In December 1953, "after repeated requests of some important persons", an exclusive coupé joined the range, but owing to a price-point nearly double that of the saloon, it is thought that just 85 coupés were built before W187 production ended in August 1955.
First registered on 16th August 1955, the car has been in the current owner's possession since 2002.
It is offered with a pair of suitcases and accompanied by a selection of documents, including original German registration papers (Fahrzeugbrief and Fahrzeugschein), technical inspection records, invoices for parts, the purchase invoice between the previous and current owner, and several handwritten maintenance notes.
The car has been professionally maintained in the owner's private workshop. However, while it has benefited from regular care, it has been kept on static display in recent years. As such, it will require recommissioning before being returned to road use.
