Lot 141

Offered from the Dale Winfield Collection,
Carl Fogarty's 1988 season 'Rapide' racing helmet,

Offered from the Dale Winfield Collection, Carl Fogarty's 1988 season 'Rapide' racing helmet,

in distinctive red, white and gold livery, this hand-painted helmet features the Red Rose of Lancaster to the front and 'Carl' to the reverse, with logos for Arai Helmets. It bears an applied ACU label, a Snell certification number inside, and three scrutineer stickers – one for Kent Racing Combine at Brands Hatch, the other two faded. The helmet shows clear signs of track use, including chips, marks, and scuffs. Date of manufacture stamped to the chin strap: 05/88. Obtained by the late vendor directly from Carl Fogarty.

Footnotes

The following identification and insight has kindly been provided by Mike Fairholme of Mike Fairholme Designs, who painted Carl Fogarty's helmets:
"The six slots on the chin bar suggest the design lineage of Arai's Super Vent or Racing Vent helmets, but the presence of 'Rapide' on the rear identifies this as a distinct model—likely sourced from outside the UK, as the Rapide wasn't officially sold here. The Snell certification (rather than a British Standard label) supports this.

The Rapide shared characteristics with the Racing Vent, including the brow and top vents, and some versions featured these rubber intake elements as standard. While Arai Racing Service often modified helmets for favoured riders, this helmet's date of manufacture—May 1988—places it just before the introduction of the Giga model later that season. It's very possible this helmet was used by Carl in early 1988 while waiting for the new Giga helmets to arrive, or was a recently retired example passed to Dale Winfield."
