Lot 112

c.1969 BSA 172cc Bantam Project

c.1969 BSA 172cc Bantam Project
Registration no. not registered
Frame no. DS3204 (see text)
Engine no. PD 06844 B175

Developed from the pre-war DKW RT125 and announced in 1948, the Bantam became a top seller for BSA, in excess of 500,000 leaving the Birmingham factory before production ceased in 1971. Originally of 123cc, the engine grew first to 148cc and then to 172cc. The introduction of the 172cc D10 model in 1966 marked a number of important developments, the most important of which were a change to coil ignition (replacing the old flywheel generator) and the adoption of a four-speed gearbox, while a raised compression ratio and bigger carburettor increased maximum power to 10bhp and the top speed to 62mph.

The Bantam's final incarnation - the D175 with much-revised engine - appeared in 1969. Although at first glance its power unit looked unchanged, the 175 boasted new crankcase and cylinder head castings, the latter with central spark plug, and a stiffer crankshaft assembly among many other more minor modifications. The preceding D14's cycle parts were carried over unchanged to the new 175, which was built in roadster and Bushman (trail) versions.

The Bantam offered here is a partially restored, unfinished project, currently displaying a total of 17,273 miles on the odometer. The machine comes with a dismantled engine and sundry other parts and is sold strictly as viewed. There are no documents with this motorcycle and its history is not known. It should be noted that the frame number appears to be a non-factory stamping.
