Although launched as a '500', Ariel's Square Four was soon enlarged to 601cc with an eye on the important sidecar market, this bigger version being made available for the 1932 model year. In 1937 a total redesign saw it re-emerge as the Model 4G, with 995cc overhead-valve engine, making the Squariel an even more enticing prospect for sidecarists. Anstey-link plunger rear suspension became an option in 1939 but would not be offered again until 1946 when a telescopic front fork replaced the previous girder type. An exercise in weight shedding saw the cast-iron cylinder head and barrel replaced by alloy components for 1949, the revised model, now capable of 90mph-plus, being known as the 'Mark 1'.
This Mark I has an interesting provenance, being associated with the well-known motor trader and Isle of Man TT rider Arthur Wheeler of Epsom. Originally registered as a motorcycle/sidecar outfit, the Ariel was first owned by a Mr Charles Pawsey of Kensington, West London. Arthur Wheeler acquired it in 1964, though it appears to have remained largely unused until purchased by the vendor's father in 1988. He rebuilt the bottom end and replaced a con-rod, though the machine was never completed and started under his ownership.
The vendor inherited the Ariel in 2009, subsequently overhauling the engine (including a cracked cylinder sleeve) and successfully running the machine for the first time since 1964. Used only briefly on the road, it ran well until halted by an electrical short. Some mechanical work has since been carried out, though the vendor notes that the cylinder barrels are worn and would ideally benefit from relining and new pistons.
The Ariel has had two engine changes in its life: fitted with a Mark II unit ('ML185') in 1972, and now carrying a Mark I engine ('TM1164'). The originally supplied engine was 'TM833'.
Accompanying paperwork includes a V5C; a continuation logbook dating from 1964 listing the aforementioned owners; a photocopy of the old-style V5 recording Arthur Wheeler; a spare parts list; and numerous invoices.
Adding further interest is the vendor's father's motorcycling background: a Civil Defence despatch rider during the Blitz; later a racing mechanic for Arthur Wheeler; and for 45 years Chief Medical Adviser to the A-CU, ultimately becoming Honorary President of the FIM Medical Panel.
A fascinating Square Four offered from long-term family ownership, ready for recommissioning.
