Introduced in Japan in June 1986, the Yamaha TZR250 impressed in that year's Isle of Man Production TT, resulting in UK importer Mitsui deciding to bring the model to these shores for 1987. The first of a family of quarter-litre 'race reps' that would later include reverse cylinder and 90° V-twin variants, that first 2MA model was powered by Yamaha's traditional parallel twin, quipped with its RD350 YPVS predecessor's exhaust power valve but updated with reed valve induction directly into the crankcases. This compact engine/gearbox went into Yamaha's trend-setting aluminium Deltabox frame. The UK market received the 2MA version while the power-restricted 1KT was reserved for Japan. Production ceased following the arrival of the reverse-cylinder 3MA in 1989.
First registered in the UK on 2nd January 1992, this TZR250 was acquired by the current owner in July 2009, since when it has formed part of his private collection. The Yamaha has had a cosmetic restoration, including a new fairing, and currently displays a total of 11,802 miles on the odometer. There is no V5C document present but the machine is on the DVSA and HPI databases.
