1978 Honda CBX1000
Registration no. ALP 897S
Frame no. CB1-2000878
Engine no. CB1E-2001173

Just as it had in the preceding decade with the four-cylinder CB750, Honda stunned the world again in the 1970s, introducing the Gold Wing super-tourer and outrageous six-cylinder CBX1000. Launched in 1978, the latter was not the first six of the modern era, Benelli's 750 Sei having beaten it by a couple of years, but it was by far the biggest and fastest. Weighing around 550lb and with 105bhp on tap, the CBX was good for 130mph-plus and scorched through the standing quarter-mile in around 12 seconds. For most owners though, it was not the CBX's performance so much as its on-road presence that mattered. Even today, few bikes can match it for charisma, visual appeal and, above all, sound.

This CBX was purchased by the vendor's late father (a Honda dealer) for £500 cash from Tony Gooderick at Honda Chiswick. Although not a pre-production machine, his father believed the CBX was one of the road test bikes. He took it to the Isle of Man TT in June that year - and the vendor can still remember the amazed reaction of people to it (the fact it was registered on 1st June 1978 would support this.) The old-style V5 on file records the vendor's father as registered keeper on 1st June 1981 and states one previous keeper (believed to be the Honda dealership he ran). Currently displaying a total of 6,976 miles on the odometer, it is described by the vendor as being highly original aside from the replacement exhausts. The machine is offered with a workshop manual (photocopy) and an owner's manual (in original slipcase).
