In the late 1980s Neville Evans started Manx Engineering in his home town of Port Talbot in west Glamorgan, with the aim of manufacturing an modernised version of the Featherbed-framed Norton Manx for either road or track use. He used the long-stroke single-overhead-camshaft Norton International engine, and manufactured new parts which for the most part were interchangeable with original Norton components. Improvements over the original design included the enclosure of the valve gear in a new cam box, which featured roller bearing cam followers and sealed pushers. Coil valve springs were used, and bore/stroke dimensions altered to 85x88mm. The gearbox was a close-ratio AMC, with primary transmission via a Bob Newby belt drive. Frames were made by Reynolds' Ken Sprayson, while other specification highlights included Norton Roadholder forks, Armstrong shock absorbers, a Triumph conical rear hub, and a 4LS Grimeca front brake. Bikes were available in road trim, with lights, or track guise as seen here. It is believed that relatively few of these machines were produced, although quoted figures vary wildly between 10 and 50.

Our vendor purchased this example in 2012, since when work has been carried out on the magneto, and the Gardner carburettor swapped for a Dell'Orto (bills and Gardner carburettor included). Displayed at the Brooklands Museum and last run in 2019, the machine will require recommissioning before further use and thus is sold strictly as viewed.
