Lot 357

1914 Triumph 225cc Junior ('Baby Triumph')

1914 Triumph 225cc Junior ('Baby Triumph')
Registration no. LM 429
Frame no. 25 (partially obscured, see text)
Engine no. 118

A rare survivor of Triumph's lightweight two-stroke Junior, affectionately known as the 'Baby Triumph', this example comes with excellent documentation and continuous provenance.

Accompanying paperwork includes a V5C (listing frame '256374'); two Pioneer Certificates (1978 and 1986); and an old-style V5 naming the vendor's father as current owner and William Rose of Woldingham as previous. Also on file is a 1925 buff logbook documenting five keepers, including Rose, with licensing recorded between 1925 and 1934. A factory letter from 1962 confirms the machine's 1914 manufacture, and the machine also comes with sundry invoices and MoTs; a small quantity of spares; and the aforementioned Pioneer Certificates.

The Baby Triumph was acquired by the vendor's father in 1985 and has since enjoyed regular Pioneer Run participation, completing the course almost every year since, save for two failures, and twice winning the Timothy Smith Memorial Trophy for best Veteran Triumph in the Banbury Run. The machine has also been depicted on the road in period photographs.

The engine was re-sleeved many years ago, and aside from routine maintenance little other work has been necessary. Evidently restored long ago, the Triumph remains in tidy condition today, a charming and proven Pioneer-eligible machine with an enviable record of participation
