Sold for £9,775 inc. premium

1935 Morgan 998cc MX Family
Registration no. BUF 319
Frame no. D1349
Engine no. MX 767

H F S Morgan's first three-wheeler of 1910 coincided with an upsurge of interest in cyclecars. Of simple construction with front-mounted motorcycle engine and two-speed chain transmission, the Morgan was light, fast and economical to run. Competition from small sports cars forced the adoption of a three-speeds-and-reverse gearbox in 1931, the last two-speed model leaving the factory the following year. From the early 1930s onwards, Morgan three-wheelers, like George Brough's superlative motorcycles, were fitted with Matchless engines in preference to those from JAP, commencing in 1932 with the MX three-speed Sports and Family models, which were powered by a 50-degree sidevalve v-twin producing 27.5bhp.

This Matchless-engined Morgan has been restored and developed by the current owner over the last 28 years. It has been used on local VMCC runs annually for the last 28 years, as well as the occasional Morgan Three Wheeler Club run. Engine, clutch and chassis work has been carried out by Morgan specialists including Cameron Engineering, Bob Angell and George Darbyshire. Updates include: radiator re-cored in 2024; cylinder barrels and heads repaired; new cylinder head bolts and nuts; and rebored barrels and new pistons in 2019. An Imp clutch has been fitted and the rear forks strengthened. In 2015 an alternator, electronic ignition and starter motor were fitted and the car rewired to 12V and electric start. The carburettor has been refurbished. Offered with a V5C document and a substantial history file.
