The Taylor Collection, 1914 Peco 349cc

The Taylor Collection
1914 Peco 349cc
Registration no. OB 3070
Frame no. 35
Engine no. 218915

Peco was an abbreviation of the surnames of the owners Pearson and Cole, who made their own motorcycles as well as supplying their single cylinder air cooled two stroke engines with outside flywheel and a patented oiling system to other manufacturers. Two accompanying photocopied pages from 1914 issues of "Motor Cycling" inform us that Peco entered a three man team in the 1914 Junior TT. Two of the three retired, but N. O. Soresby finished the gruelling five lap race in just over five hours, and reported that his little engine was as good at the finish as it had been at the start.

The vendor purchased this rare survivor in 2015 from well-known vintagent Tony Donnithorne. It is supplied with an all-important Pioneer certificate, two 1920s tax discs, and copies of an informative four-page article about Peco engines from "Motorcycle and Cycle Trader" of 3.4.1914. The accompanying V5C records the date of first registration as January 1921, this being shortly after the introduction of the Roads Act of 1920, which required local councils to register all vehicles at the time of licensing and to allocate a separate number to each. Many vehicles, although in existence for several years in some cases, were only registered for the first time after the Act's passing.

The Peco has not been run since last year and some recommissioning would be advisable before further use. Prospective bidders must satisfy themselves regarding the motorcycle's provenance, condition, age, completeness, and originality prior to bidding. Sold strictly as seen.
